In Ephesians 6:18, Paul’s admonition on prayer requires “staying alert” that we might pray at all times with all perseverance. The theme of “watching and praying” comes from Christ’s instruction to His disciples: “Watch and pray that you enter not into temptation.” This is precisely Paul’s point. We must be alert, praying at all times because the enemy is a schemer. We must be alert, praying with all perseverance because the enemy is a relentless foe.
