A Fragrant Offering 5/8/2022

Philippians

In Philippians 4:14-20, Paul commends this congregation for their faithful partnership in the Gospel. In verse 18, he shifts from the language of commerce to sacrifice, describing their gift as a fragrant offering. This is biblical terminology referring to God’s assessment of redemptive sacrifices as a sweet-smelling odor by which His wrath is assuaged and His justice satisfied. Such sacrifices pointed to Christ’s offering of Himself on the cross. Jesus is the ultimate fragrant sacrifice by which we are reconciled to God. Paul considers the Philippians sacrificial gift as a fragrant offering because they were exhibiting Christ-like character.
