The Parable of the Soils

The parable Jesus explains in Mark 4:13-20, examines how different types of soil represent the various conditions of human hearts when receiving the gospel. The question of Jesus’ identity demands a response—no one can remain neutral. Mark describes four groups of people and their responses to Christ: the general population seeking signs and wonders, Jesus's natural family who initially thought him insane, the religious leaders who blasphemed by attributing his works to Satan, and the Apostles and devoted followers whom Christ called to himself. Only God's electing grace can transform the hardened, rocky, or thorn-infested soil of our hearts into good soil that receives the word, takes deep root, and bears fruit for the kingdom. While we cannot change our own hearts, we can cry out to the divine gardener to till, excavate, and weed the soil of our hearts so that God's word might flourish within us.
