Being Christ's disciple requires denying self and taking up one's cross. This involves dying to our own self-interests and agendas that we might serve Christ supremely. As Christ's rebuke of Peter in Matt 16 shows, this relinquishing of control applies even to our own assessments of God's will. Peter was called to deny his own agenda for Jesus and follow His Master.
