We live in a culture that prefers icons over words and experience over written witness. However, as Christ’s prayer in John 17:6-8 affirms, God chose to reveal Himself in words. Jesus manifested the Father’s name to those given to Him and the majority of His ministry was teaching. Even His miracles needed exegesis. The divine words of revelation are the work of the Triune God. The words are from the Father, given to the Son who speaks them and illuminated to the hearts of God’s people by the Spirit.
