In Phil 2:12, Paul urges the saints to “work out their own salvation.” This must be interpreted in light of Paul’s broader instruction that began in Phil 1:27. This admonition is connected to what comes before by the word, “therefore.“ As confirmed by the rest of Scripture, this command does not mean we must find our own path to salvation, nor or we able attain salvation by our good works. As the next verse shows, we can only work out our own salvation by the power of God.
