After the visit of the wise men, Herod seeks to destroy Jesus and the family flees to Egypt. Matthew sees much more to the story than a tyrant's hatred of Jesus and God's preservation. Christ's sojourn into Egypt and His subsequent return is a recapitulation of Israel's Exodus. However, Jesus will succeed where Israel failed.
