The primary goal of Christian marriage is to reflect something of the relationship between Christ and His church. Christ demonstrated His love for the church by giving Himself over to death on the cross that He might sanctify her, present her to Himself in splendor and render her holy and blameless. Christ paid the highest cost to redeem an unworthy people and transform them into a radiant bride. Husbands are called to follow this example of self-sacrificial love for their wives. This is a love that does not depend upon emotions or natural attraction. Godly love is a deliberate choice based upon a renewed way of thinking that results in specific actions that benefit the one who is loved.
