Before true discipleship is possible a person must be born anew by the Spirit. From Christ's Words in John 6, we see that God gives to Christ those who believe. This giving includes sovereignly working new life in them and effectually drawing them to Christ. This is a picture of repentance (turning from the world) and faith (turning to Christ). This is the work of God alone. As the Scripture elsewhere affirms, this salvation, including the faith with which the grace of salvation is received, is not of ourselves, it is the gift of God.
