Christ prays that His people be one. Given the diversity of belief and traditions among Christians today, in what way is our Lord’s prayer being answered? True Christians are united in the essential truths of the Gospel of Christ. The Apostle Paul encourages forbearance and liberty concerning matters of indifference. True Christians are united in their love for God above all, their love for one another and their love for all who are made in God’s image. True Christians are not one with professing Christians who are united in their so-called “love for humanity” while being indifferent about the authority of the Scripture and the nature of Christ. They are outside the pale of the Christian faith and engaged in idolatry.
