The fourth verse of "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" begins, "That Word above all earthly powers." This is the unassailable Word of God that brought about the Reformation. Most people remember the Reformation in terms of Luther's return to the biblical doctrine of salvation. But, it was his adherence to Sola Scriptura that stood behind it all. The restoration of the Word of God to its rightful, exalted place brought reformation to worship as well. At the center of that reform was a return to biblical preaching.
