In Habakkuk 2:4, the Lord contrasts the way of life and the way of death. Those on the path of death are perverse in heart because of their prideful claims of self-sufficiency. This was the sin of the Garden as the serpent convinced Adam and Eve to pridefully turn away from God and seek independence from the source of life. As Jeremiah 17:5 says, those who trust in flesh have turned away from the Lord.
