The LORD of the Sabbath
In Mark 2:23-28, the conflict between Jesus and the Pharisees over Sabbath observance reveals how religious leaders had confused their traditions with God's Law itself. The account of Jesus' disciples plucking grain on the Sabbath becomes a question of Jesus' identity and authority. Despite the Pharisees biblical knowledge and orthodox beliefs, they failed to recognize Jesus as the fulfillment of Scripture standing in their midst. Jesus demonstrates that the Sabbath was created as a blessing for humanity, not a burden, and that He, as Lord of the Sabbath, has the authority to interpret its true meaning. The Pharisees’ legalism divorced God's commands from His attributes of mercy, justice, and faithfulness. God's commandments are not heavy burdens but opportunities to reflect His glorious nature through the power of Christ.
