A New and Joyous Day

The third controversy between Jesus and the religious leaders in Mark chapter 2 focuses on the question of why Jesus' disciples did not fast while John's disciples and the Pharisees did. Jesus' presence marked a new and joyous day—a time for feasting rather than fasting. The religious leaders missed the significance of this watershed moment in history when the kingdom of God had drawn near in Christ. Jesus contrasts the mournful preparation of John the Baptist's ministry with the celebratory nature of Christ's ministry, using the metaphor of a wedding feast where the bridegroom is present. While fasting remains a legitimate spiritual discipline for believers today, it is no longer commanded but voluntary, and our overall posture should be one of thanksgiving and joy because we live in the power of Christ's resurrection through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.
